民國初年，一日，榮寶齋接到了一封書簡:筆者有一幅書法作品意欲出售。出讓字畫的客戶家住北城，收購字畫歸來的二掌櫃顯得興奮異常，對祖父張幼林說道，「東家，咱們今兒可撿了個大漏兒!」
祖父趕忙展開畫軸細看，不禁大驚失色。呈現在眼前的，竟然是明代大家文徵明的墨寶!祖父忙問二掌櫃，究竟花了多少大洋收來此寶?
二掌櫃沾沾自喜地伸出一隻巴掌，一正一反地在祖父的眼前晃了晃。祖父看罷，頓時急紅了臉:「你就給人家這點兒?」二掌櫃連忙回道:「不是我出的價，是本主自己要的!」祖父仍然怒氣不減:「就算本主不懂行情，你也不能就坡下驢，糊弄人家!」說完，祖父親自來到櫃上支取了已付價錢三倍的大洋，細心包好，責令二掌櫃馬上前往東四十條，務必將大洋親自交與貨主。
張新年告訴記者，當初發現張大千、溥心畲，乃至將二位推向畫界頂峰的伯樂，榮寶齋功不可沒。
張大千自幼習書學畫，二十幾歲時來到了北京。他意識到:北京名家雲集，若想立足成名，求得業內首屈一指的榮寶齋的認可，則是重中之重。
榮寶齋對於張大千的造訪也是喜出望外。以他的才華和名氣，若能在榮寶齋掛筆單，將是名利雙收的大好事。為了促成這一好事，東家張幼林設宴款待張大千。張大千頗具酒量，喝乾了一瓶蓮花白又叫了一壺衡水老白乾。張大千鄭重地斟滿兩杯敬張幼林，張幼林從不飲酒，可是在這種情況下一仰脖兒也喝了，事後整整醉了三天!二十齣頭的張大千從此在榮寶齋掛上了筆單，潤筆(酬金)居掛單諸位名家之首。
榮寶齋多次為溥心畲開個人畫展，向世人展示溥心畲橫溢的才華。
張先生說，我對榮寶齋三百年老店的深情，如今全部寄託在京劇里。
張新年出生在南城有名的椿樹地區，京劇界的大腕名流在這里雲集居住。1962年，武漢京劇團與北京京劇團「走馬換將」，張君秋先生去湖北，高盛麟先生則來北京，與北京京劇團(具體地說就是與裘盛戎先生)合作演幾出拿手戲，「演出《連環套》的那天，裘先生展現在我眼前的是一位飽經風霜，除暴安良的綠林老英雄形象!」
